Oct. 7 Council Highlights
County councillors heard a presentation from Dominic Boyd, an educator and coordinator with the Alzheimer’s Society, about the support the society can offer in Pictou County. He has been using his position to connect with local community groups so he can share the society’s information with them as well as reaching out to municipalities. Council has supported the efforts of Allan (Dinger) Bell and Service Nova Scotia as well as Internal Nova Scotia to name a brook west of Irish Mountain and flows north into McLellan’s Brooke into the Brookville/Willard Fraser Road as the Billy Boudreau Brook. William Alfred Boudreau was born in New Glasgow in 1929 and enlisted in the Navy in Halifax in 1951. He was stationed on the HMCS Kootenay and perished due to an explosion that was caused by a fire on board. Chief Petty Officer 2nd Class Boudreau was buried at sea and this brook will give his descendants a place to visit in his memory.
The Linacy Fire Department has been granted approval under the tax exemption and reduction policy for lands and buildings owned at 7 Willow Drive, Linacy.
Council has committed approximately $275,000 to the Pictou Library Project. The Town of Pictou and the Municipality have been asked split equally the cost of $550,000 for a new library branch in the Town of Pictou being built at the deCoste Performing Arts Centre. It will be known as a cultural hub that will provide valuable services to library users in the western electoral districts of the Municipality of Pictou County. There will be a public meeting hosted by the Pictou-Antigonish Regional Library about the new library on Oct. 16 at 7 p.m. at the DeCoste Performing Arts Centre. Everyone is welcome.
Two municipal grants were approved by Council. They were given to the Pictou Island Community Association for $1,535.14 for deck construction of the community centre and Campbells Cemetery for $2000 for maintenance and lawn care.
Council approved the installation of a streetlight at the intersection of Heathbell Road and Hardwood Hill Road in Heathbell. District 5 Coun. Wayne Murray thanked the council for the approval stating that it was needed as this is the area where the community mailboxes are located.
Fire Underwriters Survey has been awarded the contract to conduct the Municipality of Pictou County’s Fire Department Funding Review. It has the lowest tender of the three submitted which was $58,200.
Council has approved changes to its sewer connection bylaw. The amendments to the existing bylaw include:
- “dwelling” means a building, occupied or capable of being occupied as a home. Residence or sleeping place by one or more persons and shall not include a hotel, motel, apartment hotel, nor any building, part of building or a group of buildings or place of accommodation that provides one or more rental units used mainly for the reception of travelling or vacation public.
- No connection of recreation vehicle or travel trailer to a municipal sewer shall be permitted
- No connection to a municipal sewer of a hotel, motel, apartment hotel or any building part of a building or group of buildings or place of accommodation that provides one or more rental units used mainly for the recreation of the travelling or vacationing public, shall be permitted unless the engineer is satisfied that the connection will not adversely affect the sewer system and the engineer may require the owner requesting the connection to provide such information, independent assessment(s) and/or reports as in the discretion of the engineer is necessary to inform the engineer’s assessment and decision, at the owner’s cost.

- Halloween Hullabaloo at the Caribou Fire Hall – Oct. 26 from 6-730p.m. Free admission and families are encouraged to dress up and come enjoy a fun evening.
- Hillside Community Centre is selling tickets on a generator as a fundraiser for its new hall. The draw will take place Dec. 15. For more information, contact Peter Boyles.
- The Caribou District Fire Hall will be hosting a Hunters Breakfast starting Nov. 2. Large breakfast $10 and small $5. Includes hash browns, scrambled eggs, bacon, pancakes, toast, sausage and ham. Juice and coffee or tea. Eat in or take out. Come and enjoy
-The Springville Community Hall will host a Hunters Breakfast beginning Oct. 19 and runs every Saturday until the end of deer hunting season.
- Roast Beef Dinner at the Plymouth Fire Hall from 4-6 p.m. on Oct. 19. Don’t wait to buy your tickets from a fire department volunteer.
Council will meet Monday, Oct. 21 for its property and finance meetings at 7 p.m. in Council Chambers. It's next regular monthly Council meeting will take place Monday, Nov. 4 at 7 p.m. in Chambers.
