The MOPC is considering extending its waste collection from Pictou County cottages until December 31, 2022.
Council recommended during Monday’s Property Services Meeting to extend the current contract with GFL Environment for cottage collection from Thanksgiving weekend in October to December 31. This will cost the MOPC an extra $36,041 per year for the service extension. The recommendation for the extension will come before council during its July meeting for final approval.
Warden Robert Parker said he has heard concerns from rural residents who are using cottages now as full-time residences rather than seasonal places and require collection later into the winter months.
He said the argument was also put forward by cottage owners that winter weather doesn’t typically start now until after Christmas so service should be extended until this time so they can use their cottages for longer periods of time.
Council asked that a report be made available at the end of 2022 so it can see if the service extension is feasible. The report would outline how much waste was collected and how many days service was delivered or interrupted.
