Let's Plant Trees

Recognizing the impacts of climate change in the County, in 2019 the Municipality of Pictou County Council formed a Climate Change Advisory Committee composed of County Councillors and citizen representatives. The Advisory Committee is developing a few key action plans to address climate change impacts, including a Tree Planting Program.
YES, WE CAN be part of the solution to climate change! Although we are bombarded daily with terrifying stories of fire, heat waves, floods and drought and may feel helpless, there is something we can do - plant trees! The Advisory Committee is planning a fall tree planting campaign and we need participants.
By participating in a Homeowner Tree Planting campaign, you can:
·         Increase your property value
·         Improve your property aesthetics
·         Reduce your energy costs due to tree shading
·         Help mitigate the impacts of climate change
We are offering hardy hardwood saplings (red oak and sugar maple) for free! Why hardwoods? Once established, they can live for more than 200 years and sequester several tons of carbon each.  Much more carbon and for much longer than evergreen trees. They are also beautiful, provide cooling shade and help to anchor soil.
The saplings will be available after September 20th and they will need to be planted as soon as possible. We will offer some advice on where and how to plant and even how to protect the saplings.
To help determine Pictou County residents’ interest in participating in a Homeowner Tree Planting project, we have posted a short online survey by clicking the link below.
