Sometimes being ranked as one of the top worst Roads in Atlantic Canada isn’t such a bad thing.
It has drawn attention to a rural Pictou County road that the province says is now on its radar for repaving in the future.
Meadowville Station Road, from Trunk 256 to Truck 6 Toney River, has been listed 6th in a Canadian Automobile Association survey that ranked Atlantic Canada’s worst roads.
More than 7,000 votes were cast over the three-week campaign this year, and every road in New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, P.E.I. and Newfoundland and Labrador were eligible. Votes came from all types of road users, including cyclists, pedestrians, public transit users and motorists.
Municipality of Pictou County Deputy Warden Wayne Murray put a recent motion forward to write the province to make sure it is aware of this road’s current condition and its need for repair.
Department of Transportation and Infrastructure Minister Lloyd Hines responded in a letter to Council saying, “staff assessed the road and concur the Meadowville Station Road needs to be resurfaced and has ranked this road amongst their highest priorities for repaving”.
However, Minister Hines stated that the province’s five-year highway improvement plan only lists local roads being resurfaced in the year it is published, but every effort will be made to maintain the Meadowville Station Road “in an acceptable state of repair” as it continues to try and balance repaving needs across the province.
The 10 Worst Roads in Atlantic Canada for 2019 as voted by the public are:
1. Tripp Settlement Road, Keswick Ridge, N.B
2. Waterford Road, Waterford, N.B.
3. Markland Road, Colinet, N.L.
4. Indian Meal Line, Torbay, N.L.
5. New Brunswick 905, Petitcodiac, N.B
6. Meadowville Station Road, Pictou, N.S.
7. Witless Bay Line, Trepassey, N.L.
8. New Brunswick 480*, N.B.
