Our Climate Change Advisory Committee is looking for two things:
All residents of rural Pictou County are encouraged to join us!
We plan to plant softwood (spruce) seedlings on abandoned crops or pasture fields in early May. If you have such properties that you would be willing to donate for this purpose, please contact us. In addition, we are looking for volunteers to help with tree planting on a weekend day. It is a fun activity in which both adults and children can participate. Please contact us at kennedyeda@gmail.com to express your interest in making planting sites available or volunteering for tree planting.
We also offer free hardwood (red oak, red maple, and sugar maple) seedlings for planting on homeowner and school properties! The seedlings will be available for both spring and fall plantings. We will advise where, how to plant, and even how to protect the seedlings.
Why hardwoods?
Once established, they can live for over 200 years and sequester several tons of carbon each. Much more carbon and for much longer than evergreen trees. They are also beautiful, provide cooling shade and help to anchor the soil. These seedlings will be available on a first-come, first-serve basis. Please contact us at kennedyeda@gmail.com to register your interest in receiving seedlings in spring or fall.
