MOPC establishes Go Play Fund

The Municipality of Pictou County’s Recreation Department has launched a new program aimed at helping residents stay active and healthy.

The Go Play Fund was created with the intent of making recreation financially accessible to people of all ages. If a resident needs financial assistance to participate in a recreation program or activity and don’t qualify for other financial assistance programs, then they can apply for assistance from the Go Play Fund.

Unlike other programs that are exclusively targeted at youth, this program is open to people of all ages.

Active Community Coordinator Clare Steele, who has developed the Go Play Fund here in Pictou County, said the goal is to keep people active, which research shows has many benefits.

“Play can increase your sense of belonging in your community, improve your physical and mental health and increase your overall sense of wellbeing,” Steele said. “At Pictou County Recreation we believe that everyone should get the chance to play every day.”

The program is getting some startup funding from the Municipality of Pictou County, but the hope is that people in the community will donate as well to enable the program to be able to help as many people as possible.

For the month of June, the MOPC Council will match donations made to the Go Play Fund up to $2,000. Tax receipts are available.

Applications are available at munpict.ca and at the MOPC building at 46 Municipal Drive in Pictou.
