The Municipality of Pictou County will donate $25,000 to help with relief efforts for people in Ukraine.
District 2 Coun. Deborah Wadden put the motion forward during Monday’s Council meeting.
“It is a fight for our democracy, and it is a real concern,” she said. “Sanctions have been made and maybe we can prevent another world war, but sometimes it is out of our hands. One of the ways we can help is by sending funds to Ukraine through the Red Cross and helping them through this fight.”
She said the federal government will match donations through the Red Cross so it will be $50,000 going to Ukraine.
District 12 Coun. Chester Dewar said he has been receiving calls from residents wanting to know how they can donate to Ukraine. It was mentioned that Staples in New Glasgow were accepting donations and online donations to the Canadian Red Cross can be accepted here:
